Power Is Bound in Material Things

a Revolutionary Girl Utena fic by sarahtheboring

In the world behind the walls,
power is bound in material things:

a rose made of gold, a chain;
clear glass lenses hiding the eyes;
cameras and photographs in frames;
wheels and motors, concrete, painted lines;
letters on white paper, cut flowers, blades.

They remember her uniform when she is gone.
It was not what made them change.

A look from open eyes,
lips pressed to forehead,
a true friend's whispered promise,
voice and breath, a smile like sunrise;
it is not the ring that reaches, but the hand.

The dead prince rules brick and marble.
The living are free.
